Philippine–American War

1899–1902 · 19th century

The Philippine–American War was fought between the United States and the First Philippine Republic after Spain ceded the islands to the United States in 1898. Fighting broke out in February 1899, and Filipino forces turned to guerrilla warfare. The United States declared it over in 1902 after the capture of Emilio Aguinaldo, though resistance continued for years and many thousands of Filipino civilians died.
