Lars Porsenna

late 6th century BCE · 6th century BCE · Also known as Porsena

Lars Porsenna was an Etruscan king of Clusium (modern Chiusi) who, in Roman tradition, attacked Rome around 508 BCE after the expulsion of its last king, Tarquinius Superbus. Roman legends of Horatius at the bridge, Mucius Scaevola and Cloelia are set during his siege. Some ancient writers suggest he actually captured the city, and the stories may preserve a real period of Etruscan control.
