Tarquinius Superbus

r. 535–509 BCE (traditional) · 6th century BCE · Also known as Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, Tarquin the Proud

Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, Tarquin the Proud, was by tradition the seventh and last king of Rome. Roman historians portrayed him as a tyrant who extended Rome's power over Latium, allied with Tusculum through marriage and built the temple of Jupiter on the Capitol. His expulsion around 509 BCE was held to mark the founding of the Roman Republic.
