Late Preclassic

c. 400 BCE–250 CE · 5th century BCE · Also known as Late Formative

The Late Preclassic is the period of Mesoamerican, and especially Maya, history from about 400 BCE to 250 CE. In it the first large Maya cities emerged, with monumental temple platforms, early writing and divine kingship, at sites such as El Mirador, Tikal and Kaminaljuyu in the Guatemalan highlands. It was followed by the Classic period, the age of the great Maya dynasties.
