Lateral succession
Lateral succession is a system of inheritance in which power passes among brothers or members of the same generation before descending to the next. In the Elamite Confederation it formed part of a governing hierarchy that the site describes as unusually stable. In the Gokturk Empire, by contrast, it repeatedly produced rival claimants, a weakness exploited by Chinese dynasties and a key cause of the empire's fragmentation.
