Lebou people

Also known as Lebu

The Lebou are a people of Senegal living mainly on the Cap-Vert peninsula around Dakar, closely related to the Wolof in language. Traditionally fishermen and farmers, they won independence from the kingdom of Cayor in the 1790s and governed themselves through elected leaders and councils until French rule. They remain a recognised community in Dakar, with their own traditional authorities and the Ndëpp healing rites.
