Legnica

Also known as Liegnitz

Legnica (German Liegnitz) is a city in Lower Silesia, Poland, west of Wrocław. Near it the Mongols defeated Duke Henry II the Pious in 1241. From 1248 it was the capital of a Piast duchy whose dukes ruled until the last of the line, George William, died in 1675. Later Prussian and German, it became part of Poland in 1945 and housed the headquarters of Soviet forces in Poland until 1993.
