Leopold I of Belgium

1790–1865 · 19th century · Also known as Leopold of Saxe-Coburg

Leopold I was the first king of the Belgians, reigning from 1831 to 1865. A prince of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, he had married Princess Charlotte, heir to the British throne, who died in 1817, and he declined the throne of Greece in 1830. Chosen by the Belgian National Congress after the revolution of 1830, he ruled as a constitutional monarch and secured Belgium's independence and neutrality. His son Leopold II succeeded him.
