Lex talionis
Lex talionis is the principle of retributive justice in which punishment mirrors the injury caused, often summarised as an eye for an eye. It is prominent in the Laws of Hammurabi of the Babylonian Empire, which often varied penalties according to social status. The principle also appears in later legal traditions, including the Hebrew Bible.
