Lex Saxonum

c. 802 · 9th century

The Lex Saxonum is the law code of the Saxons, written down in Latin under Charlemagne, probably in connection with the assembly of Aachen in 802–803. It combined Saxon customary law with Frankish additions and set graded compensation payments that valued nobles far above freemen and the half-free lazzi. It is a key source for Saxon society after the Frankish conquest.
