Libreville
Libreville is the capital and largest city of Gabon, on the north shore of the Gabon estuary. It was founded in 1849 by the French navy as a settlement for Africans freed from the captured slave ship Elizia, hence its name, 'free town'. It became the capital of the Gabon colony and for a time of French Congo, and has been the capital of independent Gabon since 1960.
