Libro d'Oro

16th century–1797 · 16th century · Also known as Golden Book of Venice

The Libro d'Oro, or Golden Book, was the official register of the patrician families of the Republic of Venice, recording the births and marriages that qualified men to sit in the Great Council. Kept from the early 16th century, it embodied the closed hereditary nobility created by the Serrata of 1297. Venetian territories such as Corfu kept their own golden books of local nobles. The Venetian book was publicly burned in 1797.
