Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg

1661–1747 · 18th century

Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg was a German soldier who served Saxony and other powers before becoming field marshal of the Republic of Venice in 1715. In 1716 he commanded the defence of Corfu against a large Ottoman army and fleet, which abandoned the siege after weeks of assaults. The Venetians erected a statue to him on the island during his lifetime, and he spent his later years in Venice.
