Kefalonia
Kefalonia (Cephalonia) is the largest of the Ionian Islands, off the west coast of Greece. Byzantine until 1185, it was then ruled by Norman and Italian counts palatine, briefly by the Ottomans, and by Venice from 1500 to 1797. After the Septinsular Republic and British protection it joined Greece in 1864, and it was devastated by an earthquake in 1953.
