Lipit-Ishtar

r. c. 1934–1924 BCE · 20th century BCE

Lipit-Ishtar was the fifth king of the Isin dynasty in southern Mesopotamia. He issued a law code in Sumerian, known from later copies, with a prologue and epilogue and laws on property, inheritance, slaves and marriage. It is one of the oldest known law codes, earlier than that of Hammurabi, and he is also celebrated in Sumerian hymns.
