Long Island Sound is a tidal estuary of the Atlantic Ocean between Connecticut and Long Island, New York, in the United States, about 180 km long. Its northern shore was settled by English Puritans from the 1630s, who founded New Haven and other coastal towns. It has since been a busy waterway for shipping, fishing and recreation.
