Lord of Sipán

d. c. 250 CE · 3rd century · Also known as Señor de Sipán

The Lord of Sipán is the name given to a Moche ruler whose undisturbed tomb was discovered in 1987 at Huaca Rajada near Sipán on the north coast of Peru by the archaeologist Walter Alva. Buried around 250 CE with gold, silver and copper regalia and sacrificed attendants, he is thought to have been a warrior-priest. The find transformed understanding of Moche society.
