Louis II, Count of Flanders

1330–1384 · 14th century · Also known as Louis of Male

Louis II, known as Louis of Male, was count of Flanders from 1346 to 1384 and also count of Nevers and Rethel. He steered between England and France, won Antwerp and Mechelen from Brabant, and faced a long revolt of Ghent, which French help defeated at Roosebeke in 1382. The marriage of his heiress Margaret to Philip the Bold, duke of Burgundy, brought Flanders into the Burgundian state on his death.
