Louis-Joseph Papineau was a lawyer and leader of the Parti canadien, later the Parti patriote, in Lower Canada, and speaker of its assembly for most of 1815 to 1837. He demanded control of revenues and an elected legislative council, set out in the Ninety-Two Resolutions of 1834. When rebellion broke out in 1837 he fled to the United States and France, returning after an amnesty in 1845.
