Château Clique
The Château Clique was the name given to the small group of wealthy English-speaking merchants, officials and seigneurs who dominated the appointed councils of Lower Canada in the early 19th century. Named after the governor's residence, the Château Saint-Louis in Quebec City, it opposed the French-Canadian majority in the elected assembly led by Louis-Joseph Papineau. The conflict contributed to the rebellions of 1837–1838.
