Chastana

2nd century CE · 2nd century

Chastana was a Saka ruler of western India in the early 2nd century CE who founded the Kardamaka line of the Western Satraps, with his capital at Ujjain. Known from coins and inscriptions, he may first have governed as a Kushan subordinate. The geographer Ptolemy mentions a ruler called Tiastanes at Ozene, generally identified with him. His grandson Rudradaman I made the dynasty a major power.
