Nahapana

1st–2nd century CE · 2nd century

Nahapana was the most powerful ruler of the Kshaharata line of the Western Satraps, who held Gujarat, Malwa and much of the western Deccan in the late 1st or early 2nd century CE. Inscriptions of his son-in-law Ushavadata in the caves at Nashik and Karla record his rule and generous gifts to Buddhist monks and Brahmins. He was defeated by the Satavahana king Gautamiputra Satakarni, who restruck thousands of his silver coins found in the Jogaltembi hoard.
