Louis XVIII

1755–1824 · 18th century · Also known as Louis XVIII of France

Louis XVIII, brother of Louis XVI, was king of France from 1814 to 1824, apart from the Hundred Days of 1815. Restored by the allies after Napoleon's abdication, he granted the Charter of 1814, which kept a constitutional monarchy with a parliament and preserved many revolutionary and Napoleonic reforms. He fled during Napoleon's return and came back after Waterloo. His brother Charles X succeeded him.
