Lucien Bonaparte

1775–1840 · 19th century

Lucien Bonaparte was a younger brother of Napoleon. As president of the Council of Five Hundred he secured the success of the coup of 18 Brumaire in 1799, but he later quarrelled with Napoleon and settled in the Papal States as Prince of Canino. On his estates there he excavated the Etruscan cemeteries of Vulci from 1828, recovering thousands of Greek painted vases.
