Luis de Góngora

1561–1627 · 17th century

Luis de Góngora was a Spanish poet of the Golden Age from Córdoba. His Soledades and Fable of Polyphemus and Galatea, with their Latinate syntax, learned allusions and dense metaphors, created the style called culteranismo or Gongorism, which provoked fierce controversy, notably with Quevedo. Long dismissed, he was rediscovered in 1927 by the poets of the Generation of '27, named after his tercentenary.
