Luis Vernet

1791–1871 · 19th century · Also known as Louis Vernet

Luis Vernet was a merchant born in Hamburg who settled in Buenos Aires and in 1828 founded a settlement at Port Louis on East Falkland. In 1829 the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata appointed him political and military commander of the islands. His seizure of American sealing ships in 1831 provoked a raid by the USS Lexington, and the British reasserted control of the islands in 1833.
