Madinat al-Zahra

936–1010 · 10th century · Also known as Medina Azahara

Madinat al-Zahra was the fortified palace city built from 936 by Abd al-Rahman III a few kilometres west of Córdoba as the seat of the Caliphate of Córdoba. It housed the court, mint and administration in terraced halls and gardens. It was sacked in 1010 during the civil war that broke up the caliphate, and its ruins are now a World Heritage Site.
