Magellan's Cross

1521 · 16th century

Magellan's Cross is a Christian cross planted by the expedition of Ferdinand Magellan in Cebu, Philippines, in April 1521, at the baptism of Rajah Humabon and his people. It stands in a small chapel next to the Basilica of the Santo Niño in Cebu City and is said to enclose remains of the original cross within a later wooden casing. It is a symbol of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines.
