1105–1131 · 12th century

Mahmud II was Seljuk sultan of the western lands, centred on Iraq and western Iran, from 1118 to 1131. A son of Muhammad I Tapar, he succeeded as a youth while his uncle Sanjar kept Khurasan as senior sultan, and Sanjar defeated him at Saveh in 1119. During his reign power slipped towards the atabegs and the Abbasid caliphs.
