Ahmad Sanjar

c. 1086–1157 · 12th century

Ahmad Sanjar was a Seljuk sultan who ruled from Khurasan in the first half of the twelfth century, the last ruler to hold authority over much of the Great Seljuk realm. His defeat by the Qara Khitai at the Battle of Qatwan in 1141 and his later capture by Oghuz tribes weakened the dynasty. His death in 1157 is often treated as the end of the Great Seljuk Empire.
