Maiden Tower

Also known as Qız Qalası

The Maiden Tower is a cylindrical stone tower about 29 metres high in the Old City of Baku, Azerbaijan, standing near the old shoreline of the Caspian Sea. Its date and purpose are disputed: parts may be pre-Islamic, while an inscription links building work to the 12th century. It is the city's best-known landmark and, with the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2000.
