Makkhali Gosala

5th century BCE · 5th century BCE

Makkhali Gosala was an Indian ascetic of the 5th century BCE, the best-known leader of the Ajivika movement. A contemporary of the Buddha and Mahavira, he taught in Magadha and neighbouring kingdoms that all events are fixed by fate and that souls pass through a long, predetermined cycle of rebirths. According to Jain texts he was for some years a companion of Mahavira before they quarrelled.
