Makoko Iloo I

Also known as Iloo I

Iloo I was the Makoko, or king, of the Tio (Teke) kingdom north of Malebo Pool in the late 19th century. On 10 September 1880 he signed a treaty with the French explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza placing his lands under French protection and ceding the site where Brazzaville was founded. The treaty gave France its foothold on the Congo River and the basis of its later colony.
