Malaita
Malaita is the most populous island of the Solomon Islands, a long mountainous island north-east of Guadalcanal. From the late 19th century many Malaitans were recruited as labourers for Queensland and Fiji and later for plantations in the Solomons. The island resisted colonial control, notably in the killing of district officer William Bell in 1927 and the Maasina Rule movement after the Second World War.
