Mandume ya Ndemufayo

c. 1894–1917 · 20th century

Mandume ya Ndemufayo was the last independent king of the Kwanyama, an Ovambo people living across the border of southern Angola and northern Namibia, reigning from 1911. He resisted Portuguese expansion, but after the Portuguese victory at Mongua in 1915 he withdrew into South African-ruled South West Africa. He died in 1917 fighting South African forces sent to remove him, and is honoured as a national hero in Angola and Namibia.
