Maroons
Maroons were Africans and their descendants in the Americas who escaped slavery and formed independent communities, usually in forests, swamps or mountains beyond colonial control. Large maroon societies arose in Suriname, Jamaica, Brazil, Colombia and elsewhere, and some won recognised autonomy by treaty. In Suriname their descendants, including the Ndyuka, Saramaka and Matawai, still live in the interior.
