Maronites

Also known as Maronite Christians

The Maronites are Eastern Catholic Christians of the Syriac tradition, named after the 5th-century monk Saint Maron and centred on Mount Lebanon. Their church entered full communion with Rome in the Crusader period. Under Ottoman rule Maronite lords and peasants shared Mount Lebanon with the Druze, and conflict between the two communities in 1840 to 1860 reshaped its government; they remain one of Lebanon's main communities.
