Tanyus Shahin

1815–1895 · 19th century · Also known as Tanious Chahine

Tanyus Shahin was a Maronite muleteer and blacksmith of Keserwan in Mount Lebanon who led the peasant revolt of 1858 to 1859 against the Khazen sheikhs. The rebels expelled the lords, seized their property and set up a peasant government under his leadership. The revolt alarmed Druze lords in the south and helped bring about the civil war of 1860.
