Martand Sun Temple

8th century · 8th century

The Martand Sun Temple is a ruined Hindu temple dedicated to Surya on a plateau near Anantnag in the Kashmir valley. It was built in the 8th century by Lalitaditya Muktapida of the Karkota dynasty, within a large colonnaded courtyard. It was destroyed in the late 14th or early 15th century, but its massive limestone ruins still dominate the valley.
