Martino Zaccaria

d. 1345 · 14th century

Martino Zaccaria was a Genoese lord of Chios from 1314 to 1329. He built a fleet that fought Turkish pirates successfully, struck his own coins and took the title King and Despot of Asia Minor from the Latin claimants to the Byzantine throne. A Byzantine expedition captured him in 1329. Released later, he was killed in the crusade against Smyrna in 1345.
