Masties

late 5th century · 5th century

Masties was a Berber ruler in the Aurès mountains in the late 5th or early 6th century, known only from a Latin inscription found at Arris. In it he claims to have been duke for 67 years and emperor for 10, and never to have broken faith with either the Romans or the Moors. He is a key witness to the independent Romano-Berber kingdoms that emerged as Vandal rule weakened.
