Matsu Islands

The Matsu Islands are an archipelago off the coast of Fujian in mainland China, governed by the Republic of China (Taiwan) as Lienchiang County. Held by Nationalist forces after 1949, they were heavily fortified and shelled during the Taiwan Strait crises. Military rule there lasted until 1992, and the islands now draw visitors to their military sites and stone villages.
