Matteo I Visconti

1250–1322 · 13th century

Matteo I Visconti was lord of Milan and the real founder of the Visconti state. Great-nephew of Archbishop Ottone Visconti, he was named imperial vicar in 1294, was driven out by the della Torre in 1302 and returned with the support of Emperor Henry VII in 1311. A Ghibelline leader, he extended Milanese power over much of Lombardy but was excommunicated by Pope John XXII.
