Ottone Visconti

1207–1295 · 13th century

Ottone Visconti was Archbishop of Milan from 1262 and the founder of Visconti power in the city. Long kept out of Milan by the ruling della Torre family, he defeated them at the Battle of Desio in 1277 and took control of the city. He secured the succession for his great-nephew Matteo I Visconti, who became imperial vicar in 1294.
