Mawlid

Also known as Mawlid al-Nabi

Mawlid is the celebration of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, held by many Muslims on 12 Rabi al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. Public celebrations are first recorded under the Fatimids in Egypt, and those staged by Muzaffar al-Din Gökböri in Erbil in the early 13th century were famous. Some Muslim scholars have criticised the festival as an innovation.
