Maximilian II of Bavaria

1811–1864 · 19th century

Maximilian II was King of Bavaria from 1848, when his father Ludwig I abdicated, until his death in 1864. He accepted liberal reforms after the revolution of 1848, and in German affairs he tried to keep Bavaria independent between Austria and Prussia. A patron of learning, he invited scholars from northern Germany to Munich and founded the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.
