Melrose Abbey

1136 · 12th century

Melrose Abbey is a ruined Cistercian abbey in the Scottish Borders, founded by David I in 1136, the first Cistercian house in Scotland. It grew rich from sheep farming and the wool trade, and the heart of Robert the Bruce is believed to be buried there. Repeatedly damaged by English armies, it was largely rebuilt in the late fourteenth century and declined after the Reformation.
