Melqart

Melqart was the chief god of the Phoenician city of Tyre, whose name means 'king of the city'. Worshipped as protector of the city and its colonies, he had an annual festival of awakening, and his cult spread to Cyprus, Carthage and Gades in Spain. The Greeks identified him with Heracles, and coins of Kition and other cities show the god as Heracles-Melqart.
