Menai Strait
The Menai Strait is the narrow tidal channel, about 25 kilometres long, that separates the island of Anglesey from the mainland of north-west Wales. It protected Anglesey, the granary of the kingdom of Gwynedd, and in November 1282 an English force crossing it on a bridge of boats was routed by the Welsh at Moel-y-don. Thomas Telford's Menai Suspension Bridge first spanned it in 1826.
