Meos

Also known as Meo people

The Meos are a Muslim community of the Mewat region, in parts of Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in north-western India. Mostly farmers, they converted to Islam in stages between about the 12th and 17th centuries but long kept many customs shared with their Hindu neighbours. Many lived in the princely states of Alwar and Bharatpur, where they suffered violence and expulsion during Partition in 1947.
